Learning SQL when you have no idea where to start?
A simple way to learn SQL without juggling ten tutorials.
✨If you’re on Instagram, I have a new page.
I remember the moment I decided to learn SQL.
I was finally going to be a data analyst, and this was a tool I knew I needed to learn.
But how to begin?
That was the part I was unsure of.
Everyone online had a different order.
Some tutorials jumped straight into window functions.
Others spent ten hours on SELECT.
All of it seemed confusing.
The best way to start, as I eventually learned, was by starting with the basics, and only after I was comfortable with those would I move on to the next level.
In my latest blog post, I turned this into a roadmap with the skills lined up from beginner to advanced.
It shows what to learn first, what can wait, and how to practice without turning your brain into a bag of keyword soup.
If you want to see it, check out the post:
👉 SQL Roadmap for Data Analysts
I kept the steps simple:
Learn the basics that show up every day.
Build a foundation that will not collapse later when you add joins and grouping.
Practice on something that looks like real data, not tiny fake examples.
It is the path I would use if I had to start again.
If you are learning SQL right now, try following one level at a time. Your confidence grows a lot faster when you build in order instead of hopping around between random tutorials.
P.S.: If you are looking for some great places to learn SQL, DataCamp and LearnSQL are two of my faves.
And they both have sales on now!
What part of SQL confused you the most when you started?
Till next time,
— Sarah
